CAREER PLACEMENT

Workshops

Throughout the year, Career Placement Services presents a variety of workshops that are designed to provide job seekers with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete effectively for employment offers. The dates and times for these workshops are posted on our Career Placement Calendar, which can be viewed by clicking on the calendar link on this page. A listing of workshop subjects with brief descriptions of each are given below:
Job Fairs & Dress for Success
Focuses on how to make the most from attending job fairs. Certain things are expected from you by the employers—what are those things and what do you need to do to be prepared? The workshop also focuses on how to dress appropriately for job fairs and interviews.
Informational Interviewing
The informational interview can help you to determine whether a particular line of work is right for you, whether you are qualified, and what you need to do to prepare yourself for a career in that field.
Job Interviews
The job interview is the primary tool used by most employers to determine which candidate(s) to offer a job to. This workshop shows you what to do to prepare for an interview, how to make a positive first impression, how to conduct yourself during the interview, and how to follow up after the interview. Examples of common interview questions will be shared as well as tips on what not to do in an interview.
Networking and Using the Internet
Job seekers are shown how to build and maintain people networks that will help them to identify new job opportunities in their desired career fields, as well as how to use them to gain important information about companies and specific job opportunities.
The Internet is a powerful tool for locating job opportunities, researching companies, and learning more about any topic concerning the job search. This workshop will show the job seeker where and how to access this information on the Internet.
Resume Writing
Well-written resumes open the doors to interview opportunities. They are generally used by employers to determine which candidates will be invited for a job interview and which will be screened out. Not only does the candidate need to have the knowledge, skills, and experience required for the job, but he/she also needs to convey those qualifications on their resume in a way that is clear, concise, and easy to read with a professional look. This workshop teaches the job seeker how to use a resume, which type of resume is right for them, what content to include in the resume, how the content should be arranged, and how to write a cover letter. Those who attend will also learn what a scannable resume is, how to write one, and when to use it. Even those who have already written their resume can benefit from this workshop…especially if they are having trouble landing interview appointments.
